Roger, I would recommend you avoid using meta rfereshes in this case. You would be better served using a server-side permanent redirect which sends a code (301) to the searchg engine/browser that the page has moved. Meta refreshes and temporary redirects (302) are not considered permanent, so some search engines will not index them as they are expected to change.
Using server-side redirects will also ensure that users don't run into problems using their back buttons. If you need help setting up a server-side redirect, post what server/platform you are using. :)

Roger, I'm glad to hear you worked it out. So you know, you should be able to put redirects in place per directory as well - without causing your host to do any work. Should you need to, just run a search for .htaccess and Google should pull up quite a few results.
