As far as I know, it has never been possible to assign a group of approvers. Don't think you can create any easy workaround. In addition: keep in mind that once an object is pending (waiting for approval) it can not be edited by anyone (neither the original author or the person who is assigned to approve it). In other words, the editor can only accept or reject the pending object.
