I had something similar the other day, this is how I fixed it:

Start by moving the contents of the var directory to somewhere else (keep var/ under the same name in your EZP dir of course!!), chown var/ to apache.apache (if appropiate), refresh the site and see what happens.

If this gets it back to normal great, but make sure you remember to move your storage dir. back and chown -R apache.apache it (the one in your site cache) as otherwise you'll lose any files you uploaded.
