I also tried changing the defaut database name in an override setup.ini.append.php which i placed in the settings/override folder.

Still isn't working.

OK, solved my own problem. phpMyAdmin said that my database was running on Localhost so I assumed that this was the correct host. I guess phpMyAdmin is running on Localhost!!!

So, put the address of the mySQL server in for host and it worked.

Arrggh it's always the simple dumb mistakes that cause hours of frustration!
