webdav does not require frontpage extension.
But any MS built dav client will think that it is talking to ms frontpage when accessing files/folders over webdav, and try to access the frontpage specific files.
That means you will end up with a lot of harmless errors in your webserver logs.
Otoh, you should not see those error messages within the client. Are you sure you are using IE in "webdav" mode and not just plain http browsing?
