Are you sure that image conversion system is installed and works correct. If you using windows try to disable ImageMagick in settings/override/image.ini.append.php file or set correct path to convert.exe

set the debug mode to see the detail.

I've had a problem with GD on linux with the gif files (GD was compiled without the gif support, seems to be the default).
