It would seem to me that most load balancing solutions would work (LVS, DNS round robin, expensive off the shelf stuff) as long as you make sure that all writes are against the same database (SELECT can be done against replicated versions of it, no problem, ezpublish even has the functionality to split this) and keep the data in the FS synched.
