Can you verify that the web server has write access to the whole var directory? Lack of permissions often generates this kind of error.

I did a recursive CHMOD of the var directory through my FTP client and that did not help. I don't have shell access though so do you think I should ask my web host to do the same from their side? If I do ask, who should I request be made owner of the the files?

It turned out to be an mailinglist extension which was written for Ez 3.3 while my system is Ez 4.0. Once the extension was commented out in site.ini the login system worked agaon.
