This is certainly possible. You can either provide edit functionality on your public site for some users using login functionality. You can then provide edit functionality in your templates for users with access.
Another way (a lot more work) is to create a special admin siteaccess (similar to create a new admin interface from scratch) with only the features that you would like to have.
