Ah, I thought in the wrong direction. Of course I can just embed the object and then use the embed/line/full template views to change output.
A little tricky though for first time users (such as me) as they want to make a link to the object and specify the link text and don't think of inserting an actual object.
But still curious: Is there a way of changing the link tag output to achieve the wanted effect?
