Thanks for the quick reply. It looks like I was to fixated on using existing EZ components - your way looks much easier.
In regards to:
Proper way is to use eZ publish persisting object and fetch functions for database communication instead of direct SQL queries.
Do you know of any tutorial on how to do this? The ezpersistentobject class is nicely documented and there are a lot of examples in EZ but I wouldn't mind having an fully explained working example as I am not sure I understand everything in there (e.g how to fetch data from two related tables using the persistant object)
