I don't know what exactly you need, but maybe you should consider creating dedicated extension with module and views for writting/reading messages. Messages wouldn't be as content objects, but just objects created with ezpersitanceobject class and stored with separate db table. Then you will be able to control message flow (reading, responding) by yourself in php code. If you need it to integrate it with some templates you can write custom fetch functions.
