IMHO, it would be a nice extension. perhaps, it could be a good solution for sites where ezsearch is not good enough and when you can not use ezfind because of Java requirements.
Implemented Sphinx in eZ Publish like search engine plugin. Perhaps for anyone it will be usefull. Extension can be downloaded from http://projects.ez.no/ezsphinx
