Have you tried clear the cache both eZ publish and PHP accelerator (if available). Remove files from ez_root/var/cache and ez_root/var/(site)/cache. This looks like some dirty cache problem.
What is your environment configuration (PHP, Apache, etc.)?
Yes, I did try clearing cache, both with the shell script and by a strategically placed rm -Rf *. It didn't work.
Fortunately I did make it work again by replacing all files from the downloaded eZ tarball. Now everything seems fine. (I could swear I've not deliberately tampered with any files belonging to the installation.)
