Instead of using the date datatype you might be able to do this using a series of selectors (pull down lists) or text line fields. Have one for month, one for day, one for year, and make the day one optional. It would require a bit more customization of your templates to display the content, but it could work.

I am afraid that I prefer to use the data type date because:

a) Exists processing functions you specify for that data type (add of dates, shorting, etc.)

b) At the time of internationalizing it will not be necessary to create specific functions

c)...
