Yes they will be coming back. As Andre said, it just occured at some point that they were not representative enough, and did not help the typical case you are mentioning: "put a face on someone one is exchanging with".
But your post got me thinking that, in a more general way, it would be kind of nice to have representative profile pictures for community members, just like you have. Wondering if this idea would gallop though..
