By default the publish and unpublish functionality of ezpublish will not work, you will need to setup and configure a cronjob in order make this functionality work on your site.
If you check you ezpublish installation, you will find a number of files in the /cronjobs/ folder.
One of these files is called: /cronjobs/unpublish.php
