Perhaps I should rephrase my question like the following:
If I have a user who has the been assigned to the following role it is my belief that the user should be able to login to the admin site, edit content inside the adult studies folder (sub-tree) and add related items because all related items are stored in the media section because of my default settings.

Should this user be able to use the related objects drop-down box to upload images or files? I happen to know that they can't on my site so I'm looking for any suggustions, observations, deep thoughts, or ice cream that might be helpful in solving this issue.
Bug is now fixed. Fix will be in 3.3.6 and 3.4.0 release. It is also available from SVN (http://pubsvn.ez.no) if you want to test it asap. See bugreport for further revision information
