After trawling the ini settings and database for the problem, I eventually found an entry in the ezurlalias table that caught my attention: (in exported mysql format)
I also found that someone else had the same problem, and provides some more analysis, though I'm not sure whether this is raised as a potential bug. (ref: http://ez.no/community/forum/setu..._ee_not_found/re_module_ee_not_found )
I deleted this table entry and cleared the cache - everything works fine.
