This idea reminds me of other applications which recommend the storage of the applications <i>var/</i> like directory structure storage location not available via web server's <i>DocumentRoot</i>.
I didn't know this was possible with eZ publish stock. Though I seem to remember there being a note or downside to changing this variable ...
Like once you set it and and store files, it becomes a dependency that data is stored which later expects it to stay the same during runtime usage. That's just a guess though .. I could be completely wrong at this point ..
