Hi Mathew,

Are you using the all-in-one package (aka "Stack installer", 2 tabs in front of the "Evaluation" label there:http://ez.no/download#evaluation2 ) or you already have a *AMP stack running on which you are installing eZ Publish ?

The errors you get let me think that the database you are choosing already contains eZ Publish tables, among them 'ezapprove_items'.

Do you get PHP timeouts ?

Let us know,

hello

thanks for the reply, i used the 4.2 full installation. I dropped the tables and reinstalled but just get a blank page with no debug output, or if i use plain install i get a looping installation. I dont think im getting PHP timeouts, i asked my host to increase the time on php which he did. I run a VPS so i have quite a lot of tinkering ability...

Hi Mathew,

Did you download eZ from the following link? http://ez.no/download#production1

If so, and you get a blank screen after installing and viewing the site, check on the eZ requirements:
http://ez.no/doc/ez_publish/technical_manual/4_x/installation/normal_installation/requirements_for_doing_a_normal_installation

You can do a quick check on the php_memory_limit for your VPS. eZ requires this to be 64Mb.

If that's not the cause, it's back to Nicolas his advise :)

i downloaded:

ezpublish-4.2.0-full-with_ezc-gpl, i think the ZIP file

the memory is definately ok, i get this at finetuning:

These shell commands will give proper permission to the web server.

cd /var/www/vhosts/*myhosts*/httpdocs
chmod -R ug+rwx design extension settings settings/override settings/siteaccess settings/siteaccess/admin
chown -R apache:apache design extension settings settings/override settings/siteaccess settings/siteaccess/admin

Alternative shell commands

If you don't have permissions to change the ownership you can try these commands.

cd /var/www/vhosts/*myhosts/httpdocs
chmod -R a+rwx design extension settings settings/override settings/siteaccess settings/siteaccess/admin
Ignore this test

2. AcceptPathInfo disabled or running in CGI mode

You need to enable AcceptPathInfo in your Apache config file, if you're using apache 2.x. If you're running apache 1.3, eZ Publish will not run in CGI mode.

Check the Apache documentation, or enter the following into your httpd.conf file.

AcceptPathInfo On

Remember to restart your web server afterwards.

Ignore this test

would those cause me the issues im having?

I can speak with authority on the permissions, you MUST allow your webserver permissions as outlined. Until you do that, it will not work. Your web server must be able to read and write, otherwise the system cannot update the file structure.

These are very well designed, very helpful error messages, heed them.

thanks for the advice, ive asked my webhost to make the changes, as i cant find any of the files on the VPS. If those errors are so important, shouldnt they be flagged as required to do like the memory error is, rather than just tick box for ignore? Ive installed a lot of bits and pieces and never had this as an issue before with any of them.

Ive gone through the installation again after changing all permissions and its installed well. Can i suggest that a similar system as employed by Joomla for installation is used? this would give a simple list of file permissions that need changing, and allow stupid people like me to install much faster? :)

Im going to dive in to this software now and see what it can do, thanks to everyone for all the help.

The simple and eZ way to set the permissions. Hopefully this is the missing piece of the puzzle for those following this thread in future. It can scarcely be made any easier if your hosting allows ssh. That may be THE BIG IF.

  • Copy exactly the the suggested commands into your system clipboard.
  • ssh into your server
  • Paste the copied command strings into the ssh terminal window note.. Hand type the commands if your terminal app does not support paste from system clipboard.
  • Tap the enter key to run the last command
  • exit ssh

More detailed instructions for a Plesk VPS hosting environment..http://webportalmaster.com/index.php/eng/MT-DV/HowTo/Install-eZ-Publish-on-MT-DV-server Particularly read the last couple of paragraphs if you want to edit files from the Plesk GUI post-installation and find that you cannot.

Cheers!

Hi Mathew,

Can you post the "continuous error" you get after the installation?
