RewrieRule is the usual way to do this...

that dosn't remove the index.php from the links in my pages.

anyway to do this too?

If you implemented this in the httpd.conf of Apache then remember to restart Apache.
If you've done that, clear all the EZP cache.
Q. If you manually remove the 'index.php' part of your URLs ( in the browser address bar ) does the system still find the pages?
