Yes, you can have empty nodes. I have set up a couple of pages on one site that only display the content of their override templates.

Ah, that's good to know. I figured it could be a pretty common request, but I haven't figured out how to pull it off. How'd you do it on your site?

The steps I use are as follows:

1. Create a copy of pagelayout.tpl with a new name
2. Modify the new pagelayout.tpl so it shows the static content
3. Create a new node (I tend to use folders, but you can use whatever you want) at the location I want the page to appear.
4. Set up an override for that specific node, using the new pagelayout.tpl
5. Reset the caches and navigate to that node to ensure the right template is used.
