Check the setting of ComplexDisplayViewModes in your site.ini.append.
It's default is "sitemap", so the view cache for the sitemap view is cleared more often
because one of the objects might have changed.
So what you're trying to do should work in sitemap.tpl, but not in full.tpl (as long as you don't add "full" to ComplexDisplayViewModes).
