Well, you could check out the templates (flat_top.tpl and flat_left.tpl, I believe). Shouldn't be very hard to get it to fetch/display link objects as well.

go into your menu.ini.append.php within the siteaccess being used ( settings/siteaccess/<yourSiteAccess> or in settings/override if you want to make this global ) and add an entry for the appropriate menu like so... LeftIdentifierList[]=link
or
TopIdentifierList[]=link
