CompatibilityMode is just for how embeds are shown inside the editor.
As for the feature to insert several nodes at once, I didn't know about it, neither have anyone asked about it in the 3 years since I started working on it. But it does sound like a nice feature, so please add it in the issue tracker and we'll try to (re)add it in 4.5.
