1. You can activate debugging to show the list of used templates at the bottom of the page. You can do so from the 'Quick Settings' box in the admin interface.
2. Yes, you can edit your templates in any editor you like. Notepad will do, but if you plan to do more editing, I would suggest to install a better text editor.
You need to enable the main debug ouput as well - this is the first checkbox in the quick settings box in the admin view. Then you will see a big block with debug information which is inserted at the end of your webpage.
