Did you try this?
{attribute_view_gui image_class=original attribute=$node.object.data_map.image}
Did you add override template for image class or change something in image.ini?

--> Yes. Same result as before, unfortunately. Thumnail & text displayed.

--> Not to my knowledge. To both.
Seems like other people have had similar problems before.
